The cold open

The red 'ON AIR' bulb flickered against the salt-crusted glass of Black Cove's isolated coastal radio transmitter. At 1:15 AM, the midnight jazz reel ran out of tape, leaving only the hiss of static and the host slumped across the console. A heavy braided broadcast cable was cinched tight around Vance Sterling's throat, still warm beneath the chill of the Pacific fog.
