The cold open

Midnight in the heart of the glass-and-steel financial district, where the subterranean Roman baths of the St. Jude Wellness Club hum beneath the streetcars. At 1:15 AM, the facility engineer found Garrison Shaw floating face-down in the three-meter-deep thermal plunge pool, his lungs filled with heavily mineralized bath water. There were faint fingertip bruises on his shoulders where someone held his head beneath the steaming surface, but no struggle was heard above the hiss of the copper pipes.
