The Foley Chamber

The cold open

Midnight in the concrete belly of the district's oldest film dubbing studio, where heavy acoustic baffles swallow every scream. Vaughn Ellery lay sprawled across a scatter of broken stage glass and gravel pits inside Foley Studio B, a long steel audio-splicing spike driven straight through his sternum. The studio microphones were still live, broadcasting a dead room's hiss into the empty monitors.

The victim

Vaughn Ellery, 55, veteran Foley artist and sound design director
