The Terrazzo Spillway

The cold open

At 2:40 AM beneath the street lamps of the theater district, the velvet curtains of the Starlight Vault swung above an empty floor. Deep in the subterranean VIP lounge, Reese Van Wyck lay submerged face-down in the club's illuminated indoor terrazzo fountain, water overflowing onto polished slate tiles. His lungs were flooded with fountain water and rose petals, murdered in the quiet hush after last call.

The victim

Reese Van Wyck, 51, supper club proprietor
