The Ferrotype Bath

The cold open

Under the eerie amber and red safelights of the eighth-floor archival darkroom, the city skyline blurs through rain-slicked industrial skylights. The continuous-flow stainless steel print-washing trough hums with circulating water, overflowing onto dark rubber floor mats. Submerged face-down beneath the churning rinse bath lies Bartholomew Crane, his lungs filled with cold archival wash water.
